The
Tecnic:
Lustres,
of Hispano-Moresque origin, were discovered and
started to be used in Deruta araund the end
of the 15° century. The technique, as decsribed by Cipriano
Piccolpasso in "Li Tre libri dell'arte del
vasaio" del 1558 (The Tthree Books of the
Potter's art), does not leave room for confusion.
The reverberation is obtained in the third firing in
a reducing atmosphere (SMOKE). Lustred
Majolica was and is the greated expression of Deruta
ceramics output. The series of factors which
determine the succesfull production of a piece
(it used to be called the deceptive art') mean that
piece of majolica decorated with Lustre still
represent the highest demostration of a crafts man's
skill today. We belive we have honed this tecchnique,
albeit not without spending time and resources
before abtaining results. Our ispiration comes from
the DERUTA Lustres of the 16° century, so
the shades of cobalt BLUE and GOLD LUSTRE prevail;
tradition has given us the shades of RUBY RED
and STRAWBERRY RED LUSTRE, and their various
combination with GOLD LUSTRE. Our preferd decorative
painting style is the one whichmade DERUTA
famus: the main part is clearly influenced by the
RENAISSANCE, framed by motifs in a more ancient
style, with touches of ARAB-inspirewd painting. The
mixture of these styles, combined with the queen of
all technique (only lustred pieces were called
Majolica), gave rise to one of the most admired
movements in the FINE ART.
