The Third Firing:
This is a
firing at low temperature, about 600°C, in a reducing atmosphere,
that is to say when smoke-producing agents (wood, broom, horses’
hooves, sugar etc.) are introduced into the kiln, thereby
restricting oxidisation of the metals and causing the special colour
and refraction effects that distinguish Lustre.
After firing
and slow cooling, the object is cleaned to remove the paste and
smoke residues left on the surface. Due to the many variables at
work, the result is always different, and the object often has to be
rejected because it is smokey or has no special effects (not for
nothing was this technique known as the “Deceptive Art”).
