Lustre:
That
would seem to be the end of it; however, the Arabs had the idea of
adding another stage to the finished object, involving yet another
firing. The Lustre technique arrived in Italy, in Deruta, towards
the end of the 15th century. The technique consists of
preparing an object with the spaces to be lustred left practically
white. In the case of Deruta, the prevalent traditional base colour
was almost always blue. Decoration is then applied to the parts of
the ‘finished’ object which have been left white. There then
follows the third, ‘low heat’ firing.
