Majolica Firing Kilns:
Firing is one of the most atmospheric stages of the
whole Majolica production process. Until the beginning of this
century, firing was carried out in wood-burning kilns. This type of
firing requires skill which only comes of great experience, partly
due to the dimensions of the kiln, which could easily reach a volume
of 10 cubic metres. Keeping check on the quantity and quality of
wood to burn, and above all on the right moment to finish the firing,
was a real art. Nowadays technology makes the craftsman’s job much
easier, and the kilns available provide reliable firing in line with
requirements. Today’s majolica kilns are powered by electricity or
methane, and it is difficult to find any differences between the two
types of firing. Perhaps the most important aspect remains the
craftsman’s set-up of the various phases of firing in relation to
the many variables at work. In the second firing, especially, the
set-up of the kiln has real influence on the quality of the finished
product.
