Decoration:
The decoration of a piece of majolica takes place
using colouring substances which may be colouring oxides or suitable
salts (pigments). All possible decorations are executed using these
colouring substances on an enamelled surface. We will not dwell on
the types of decoration here, as there is an enormous variety and,
in any case, they can be seen in the pieces we produce. Normally the
decorations are reproduced on transparent paper, where the outlines
are traced with lots of small holes. This paper is then placed on
the object, and an outline is traced onto the object with the help
of a wad of charcoal. At this point decorating begins, by hand of
course, using the colouring substances described above. Once the
object is decorated, it is normal practice to cover it with a
transparent film, or glaze, which helps to fuse and homogenise the
whole piece. After that, all that is needed is the second (glaze)
firing.
